MIROCK
Superbike Series Expands in 2013, Adds Atco Raceway
The
Mickey Thompson Tires MIROCK Superbike Series
has announced their 2013 schedule and the addition of
the historic 44th Annual Orient Express U.S. Nationals
at Atco Raceway to their series. The 2013 schedule will
feature a total of nine events held between Maryland International
Raceway, Rockingham Dragway, and Atco Raceway.
The
MIROCK Superbike Series has always been held at Rockingham
Dragway and Maryland International Raceway with racers
all over the East coast supporting the series. There are
many loyal MIROCK racers from the north (including NJ,
NY, PA, DE, and CT), and with the addition of Atco Raceway
to the schedule these racers will have at least one race
close to home. Atco Raceway's Orient Express U.S. Nationals
is one of the oldest motorcycle drag racing events in
the country with 43 years of history, and has been re-established
under the MIROCK banner.
Skip Dowling of Orient Express stated
enthusiastically that "Joe (Sway) and I are really
glad to be a part of bringing the U.S. Nationals back
to the historic Atco Raceway in conjunction with MIROCK.
We have worked extensively with Jason Miller over the
years, and we are confident that this will be a great
event for racers across the northeast. It will also add
an important seventh Orient Express ProStreet event to
the MIROCK series, where the racing has been awesome!"
Jason Miller of MIROCK states, "We
are very excited to host a MIROCK event at Atco Raceway
in 2013. Orient Express has been a long time sponsor of
the MIROCK series and when I spoke to Skip and Joe about
bringing one of our events to Atco Raceway in 2013 they
were all ears to help support the event. The addition
of the U.S. Nationals will allow our MIROCK racers from
the North to have a great race right in their backyard,
and to entice motorcycle racers from even further North
to check out what MIROCK is all about. I ask all of our
loyal MIROCK racers from the Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas,
and the South as well as the West to support this iconic
event. It will allow our MIROCK sponsors to tap into a
new market and further dig our roots up and down the east
coast."
There will be a total of nine events in 2013. Seven events
will feature pro classes, sportsman classes, and the grudge
class. Two events will host sportsman classes & grudge
classes only (Sportsman Summer Sizzler & Sportsman
Showdown). The reason for this change is for Rockingham
to highlight the sportsman program, which is the backbone
of the series, and to have two events dedicated just for
the sportsman and grudge racers.
The MIROCK Superbike Series is the nation's largest all
motorcycle drag racing series drawing nearly 600 racers
and thousands of fans at each event. The series features
ten different classes competing for over $400,000 in cash
and contingencies. In addition to the motorcycle drag
racing, select MIROCK events also feature Bike Shows,
Bikini Contests, Stunt Bike Competitions, and Live Bands.
The first event for the 2013 Mickey Thompson Tires MIROCK
Superbike Series will be the FBR Shop Spring Bike Open
at Rockingham Dragway on March 22-24, 2013. For more information
visit www.MIROCKracing.com.
From
WECT-6 NBC in North Carolina via the North Carolina Motorsports
Association: "'Adrenaline' cast and crew
revved up about drag racing movie.
Several
Wilmington-based actors are starring in a full-length,
feature film that shooting right now in southeast North
Carolina and they're filming alongside John Schneider,
best known for his role in the Dukes of Hazzard."
As
you'll see on the news report on WECT-6, the racing featured
in the movie is our racing - bracket racing. Although
no details were given about the story line, it sounds
like the racing is the setting, not the focus. That could
be a smart move, because the movie might then have wider
appeal which is good for us. See the story on
WECT-6HERE.
Bruce
Larson USA-1 Tribute Car In The Works for 2013 Season
Bruce
Larson is having WORM INC build
a tribute funny car of his famous USA-1 1968 Camaro. The
USA-1 Tribute Funny Car will feature the new nostalgia funny
car chassis by WORM INC and will have a period looking fiberglass'68
Camaro body. This USA-1 Tribute Funny Car will look like
the original, but will have an up-to-date 10.1E spec chassis
so the car can be run at events across the country. It will
feature the correct paint job and decals that Bruce himself
will approve. The USA-1 Tribute Funny Car will be at nostalgia
shows across the country with Bruce himself at the wheel.
The proposed 2013 schedule of shows includes the three NHRA
Museum shows – Bowling Green, KY; Epping NH; and Bakersfield,
CA; Funny Car Reunion in Englishtown, NJ; and US30 Reunion
at Beaver Springs, PA.
Top
fuel driver and business owner Doug Herbert
has agreed to build the Hilborn injected, blown big block
Chevy for the car. “I'm really excited to have the
opportunity to work with Bruce Larson's USA-1 team and
WORM INC.” said the NHRA Top Fuel racer and president
of Doug Herbert Performance Parts. “The nostalgia
drag racing circuits have really gained popularity over
the past few years and this is where many of our customers
are racing. My Dad (Drag Race hall of Fame member Chet
Herbert) has been involved in drag racing since the early
days and it's important to me to support the history of
the sport we love, drag racing.”
NHRA
and American Red Cross Team-Up to Raise Money For Victims
of Hurricane Sandy
As
a racer from New Jersey this release from NHRA caught
my eye; I thought it was important to share with you here:
GLENDORA,
Calif. (Nov. 9, 2012) – NHRA has
teamed up with the American Red Cross to
provide an opportunity for NHRA fans to give back to those
affected by Hurricane Sandy, which caused widespread destruction
last week primarily in the Northeast United States.
Fans
can go to http://american.redcross.org/nhra-pub
to make their contribution today. All monies will go directly
to the Hurricane Sandy relief fund. Your donation provides
critical support to those in need.
I
have sad news to report: popular NHRA Division 1 bracket
racer Rick Constable has passed away
suddenly from natural causes.
Ricky
was a great person, friend and racer. He was always friendly
to everybody he met, and never, ever had anything negative
to say about anybody.
Ricky
was one of the first racers I became friends with when
I started racing in New Jersey. He even loaned me his
Camaro a few years ago when my Dodge was broken. I learned
a lot from racing with Ricky. I learned how to lose better
thanks to him, first because when I'd race against him
I'd lose more often than not (his Camaro had a huge top-end
MPH charge that fooled me on a number of occasions) and
also because I would witness how he would handle losses.
He never got angry or upset; he would just shrug his shoulders,
and focus on the next race (and on going to the diner
with his friends). He was as hardcore a racer as they
come, and lived for his time at the track racing and being
with his friends. He will be deeply missed.

Mullaney
Doubles Up At Atco Raceway's Door Slammer Nationals
Atco,
NJ (October 21, 2012) – Bob Mullaney
won the Bottom Bulb and the Top Bulb race at the 2nd Annual
Door Slammer Nationals at Atco Raceway on Sunday, October
21st, 2012. Mullaney used his trusty Franks Family Racing-owned
1972 Chevrolet Nova to navigate his way through nearly 100
of the best door slammer racers in the Northeast.
The
Bottom Bulb race was sponsored by Rob’s Automotive
& Collision Center and featured some of the top names
in the footbrake world. In 6 rounds Mullaney’s worst
reaction time was a .032 and he averaged a .021 light throughout
eliminations. In the semi finals he squared off against
Atco Raceway’s 2012 Pro Track Champion Bud McNasby.
McNasby cut a good .016 light but Mullaney pulled out a
.002 and forced Bud to breakout at the top end. In the finals
Mullaney faced Dave Nahill who just put the car in the sand
when his brakes malfunctioned. A lot of credit has to go
Nahill’s crew who got the car back together and ready
for the finals. Mullaney dialed in 9.58 and Nahill was dialed
in with a 9.70. Nahill was a bit better at the tree (.021
to a .026) but he broke top end when he went 9.666 to Mullaney’s
9.593. That gave Mullaney one trophy and check for the day
but he was not content with just that.
The
Top Bulb race sponsored by LRA Motorsports Dyno & Speed
Shop and nearly 100 door cars packed the staging lanes.
Mullaney, who still footbraked it, averaged a .019 light
through 7 rounds of racing, with his best light being a
.003 and his worst a .039. Mullany driving the same 1972
Nova that he used to win the Bottom Bulb race defeated Joe
Mealey, Dave Miller, Dom Burgese, Bryan Balducci, Rick Cox
and Dan Commorodo. In the finals it was Mullaney against
the local kid Antoine Jett. Mullaney had a slight starting
line advantage (.015 to a .020) but Jett ran into engine
trouble and clicked it off early to give Mullaney his second
victory of the day and a cool $5,000.
The
2nd Annual Door Slammer Nationals at Atco Raceway is promoted
by local racer Rob Leipziger. After another successful event
the management at Atco Raceway looks forward to hosting
the race again next year.
The
2012 Southern Outlaw Tour’s next race is

and 4.70 Index each pay $2,000 Win, $300 Runner-Up, $100

Modified pays $3,000 Win, $1,500 Runner-Up, $750 Semis,

In preparing
for The Big Tire Outlaws event on Sunday,
September 16th, 2012, the Old Bridge Township Raceway

long standing U.S. Diesel Truckin' Nationals were held the
night before and parking the Big Tire Outlaws reminded me
of the game of Tetris, maneuvering between the leftover
big rigs.

Old
Bridge Township Raceway Park will host The
Shakedown Nationals (formerly The Shakedown at
E-Town) Friday - Sunday, October 12th-14th, 2012.
This is the
10th year of The Shakedown. Classes include Pro
Modified (supercharged, turbocharged, or nitrous
oxide), Top Sportsman (usually nitrous-oxide
injected but can have other power sources), Outlaw
10.5 (highly modified on 10½-inch race
tires), Heavy Street (3,500 lb. street-appearing
machines with low-seven-second ETs), Limited Street
(street-appearing, all-metal race cars that are limited
to a 29.5-inch slick or a 315 street-legal drag radial
tire. They must weigh approximately 3,200 pounds, and
they cannot have wheelie bars), X275
(small displacement V-8 engines, and power modifications
are strictly regulated), 8.50 Index,
Pro Import, and Pro Street Bike
(must race on street-legal tires and must be stock appearing).
New York Motorsports
owner Dave Hance, founder and promoter
of The Shakedown Nationals, has seen the Northeast's premiere
street-legal doorslammer drag race evolve into the ultimate
outlaw drag racing heads-up doorslammer event in the world.
Calling it a "prolific evolution," Hance, of
Lawrence, N.Y., said he marvels at just how much this
event has grown since 2003, when just a dozen racers showed
up and the purse was $1,500.
"It has
grown to more than 250 top-notch race teams attempting
to qualify for nine heads-up drag race classes,"
Hance said. "Many of the world's greatest door-car
drag racing moments have taken place at the Shakedown
Nationals. Multiple performance barriers have fallen during
this great event. Fans and racers alike have come to expect
records to fall every year in virtually every class. And
The Shakedown Nationals has a very special element: since
Year 2 of this event, it has retained 90 percent of its
racers, fans, and marketing partners/sponsors. As a group
we all have grown collectively."

The
Mid Atlantic Super Gas Association and The Mid Atlantic
Super Comp Association are set to finish off their
2012 seasons at Atco Raceway on September 29th & 30th.
Both series have seen close racing all year and the points
championships are sure to go down to the final rounds on
Sunday.
In
MASGA, 2011 Champion Tom Goldman (left)
is looking to make it back to back championships with his
“Bullets to Spare” Corvette. Goldman holds about
a 4 round lead over 2nd place Lance Kreiger but lurking
in the distance is George Smith and his “Live Wire”
1968 Camaro. Smith has been on a tear as of late with a
victory at Numidia and a runner-up at Cecil County to move
him into 3rd place. Rounding out the top 5 is Pete Luciano
and Derek Clark.
In
MASCA, Ken Moses (right) has been the lead
horse pretty much all year long but is feeling some stiff
competition from last year’s co-Champion Joey Cambria
and Don Butkiewicz. Both drivers still have 1 race left
to claim and with a 4th round finish or better can surpass
Moses in the standings. Rounding out the top 5 are recent
Atco winner Kevin Scholl and early points leader Tom Dauber.

10:00 am. There will also be a special National Dragster
Challenge Wally Day held in conjunction with MASGA &

on attending the NHRA Uni-Select Auto Parts Nationals at
Maple Grove the following weekend this would be a great
test & tune. The fee for each MASGA and MASCA is $70.00
per day to be paid to Lucky Luciano (MASGA) or Rob Keister
(MASCA) and $30.00 to be paid at the gate for the track
entrance and tech card. For more info visit www.midatlanticsupergas.com

Numidia
Dragway’s AHDRA Event was Homecoming for Rich Vreeland
When
Numidia Dragway played host to the All

in his eighth season as a professional motorcycle racer,
Vreeland’s return to Numidia served as a homecoming
where he began his career. His business, Vreeland’s
Harley-Davidson, was the presenting sponsor of the event
which drew a very respectable crowd and a full pit area
of bike racers.
“This
is my home track, it’s my sponsor’s track
and our dealership is just seven miles from here so it’s
all my family and all my friends, it’s a lot of
fun this weekend,” said Vreeland while in between
rounds on Sunday.

Worner
Brothers Double-Feature Plays at Numidia Dragway
Byron
and Bryan Worner from nearby Duncannon,
PA took no prisoners at the 2nd Annual Combo in
the Hills Stock / Super Stock Race held at Numidia
Dragway on Friday and Saturday, June 8th and 9th.
On Friday evening Bryan Worner defeated
Angelo Di Tocco from Mahopac, NY in the
special CIC Event held under the lights in front of a huge
crowd. As in most CIC Races it’s not always the fastest
car that wins the race as Bryan qualified #7 out of 11 cars
but, used quick reaction times and smart driving to claim
the victory 9.77 (10.66 index) over DiTocco’s 9.90
(10.59 index).
On
Saturday brother Byron Worner decided it
was his turn to shine as he drove his 1996 Camaro to victory
over Jeff Tripp’s 1984 Monte Carlo.
Worner had victories over Dean Mowery, Bruce Ward, Bill
Belden before strapping a .13-thou package on Lee Valentine
for a bye into the final. Tripp took his Monte Carlo to
the final with victories over Di Tocco, Bryan Worner, Ed
Horensky, Ryan Horensky and a broken Lee Zane in the Semis
to match up with Byron in the final.
Both drivers were deadly at the tree (Byron .004 to Tripp’s
.007) but Tripp’s car tripped at mid-track and could
only muster a 9.093 on his 9.04 dial, handing the win to
Byron who ran a 10.026 on his 10.00 dial-in. Byron joins
Canadian Bryan Clayton as winners of the Combo in the Hills
event. Look for more info in the next coming months regarding
the 3rd annual event.

Chicago Shootout Coming To Lebanon Valley Dragway
Portatree
Timing Systems and Lebanon Valley Dragway
are putting on a different kind of bracket race on Saturday,
June 30th. It’s the Chicago Shootout,
and it’s unique so throw out how you’ve been
bracket racing. This is package racing;
it uses a full tree and dial-ins, but redlights and breakouts
are handled differently than the way you’re used to.
With redlights, you’re not considered red unless you’re
-.101 or worse; from .000 to -.100 you still get a green
light. With breakouts, there really aren’t any. The
goal of each round is to get closer to perfect than your
opponent. The racer who is closest to a perfect light and
closest to the dial (whether over or under) will have the
better package and will get the round win. I’m sure
we’ve all encountered going .001 red while our opponent
goes stupid late but gets the round win. This race changes
that.
There
are classes for Electronics and Non
Electronics. The format will be one qualifying
round and then three all-run rounds of eliminations. For
the first three rounds winners and losers all advance,
in other words you’re guaranteed four passes down
the track no matter what. During the first three rounds,
there’ll be a guaranteed $500 paid for the best
package in each of the rounds. At the end of the first
three rounds, the racers who have won all three rounds
will move on to laddered eliminations (if there are no
three-round winners, then two-round winners will move
on). The winner of each class gets a guaranteed
$5,000, and the Runner-Up gets $1,500 (payouts
based on 64 cars entered per class). Entry is
$85.
The
date is one week after the NHRA Divisional at The Valley.
If you’ll be racing the Divisional, you’ll
be able to leave your stuff at the track for this event.
There’ll also be an all day test & tune on Friday,
June 29th. Gates open Saturday at 8:00 am,
with racing beginning at 9:30 am. For more information

Extreme
Pro Stock driver David Schorr and Schorr
Family Racing has had their ups and downs this season, but
they made a major move at the Gateway Drags IV presented
by CarSafe in St. Louis. While eager to start the first
full season with ADRL in Extreme Pro Stock, Schorr Family
Racing was pleased with their first outing in Houston. Schorr,
driver of the Larry Larson Race Car 2004 Ford Escort ZX2
powered by John Kaase, beat 2010 Extreme Pro Stock Champion
John Montecalvo for a huge upset. That momentum was halted
– at least momentarily – by not qualifying in
Bristol.
Schorr
rebounded in May by qualifying at No. 15 in Maple Grove.
There, Schorr pulled off another huge upset, gaining a
holeshot win against Pete Berner. Like Houston, Schorr
gave Brian Gahm a run for his money, only to fall short
once again. Still, he took momentum into St. Louis, which
is the closest stop on the ADRL Tour to the team’s
home. In what ended up as the quickest qualifying field
in XPS history, Schorr qualified at No. 12 with an impressive
4.079.
After
a holeshot win against Elijah Morton in the first round,
Schorr met up with Richie Stevens Jr. in the quarterfinals.
“I knew this was going to be a close race. Richie
is great on the light, so I had my work cut out for me,”
Schorr said.
Schorr
was out of the gate first and went on to his first semi-final
appearance this season. Schorr was paired up against Trevor
Eman in the semi-finals. Although Schorr was first out
of the gate, he slowed down to a 4.19 only to watch Eman
make his way to the final. “It was on a great pass
until the motor starting sputtering,” stated Schorr,
“I was worried that we had hurt a motor. After going
back to the pits, the problem was a $10 spark plug.”
Schorr
will look to build on the performance in St. Louis at
the upcoming U.S. Drags V, which takes place June 22-23
at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Fezell
Breaks Into The 8s In NHRA Stock Eliminator
Don
Fezell raised the Stock Eliminator bar a notch
when he broke into the 8s earlier this season at the NHRA
Four-wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway. Fezell ran an amazing
and record-setting 8.954 at 153.88 mph on the 10.00 AA/S
index. This was the first ever eight second pass in NHRA
Stock Eliminator history.
Fezell's
Cobra Jet is manually shifted, and he credits McLeod Racing
(www.mcleodracing.com)
for their role in his being the first to break the 8-second
barrier. "I’ve been running a McLeod clutch
in my Cobra Jet for years and have set a few records in
the process,” says Fezell, “I can’t
thank McLeod enough for building the highest quality and
toughest clutch available. We literally abuse that McLeod
clutch on every pass without ay failure.”
McLeod
Racing is proud to be the clutch of choice for Fezell
and his record setting Mustang. "We are so proud
to be able to prove on the track that McLeod clutches
help drivers achieve record setting E.T.’s,”
says Paul Lee, NHRA Funny Car driver
and McLeod Racing owner. "Our goal here at McLeod
is to replicate our on-track success of quality and innovation
into the design of all our clutches. From our Street Pro
to our full race Pro Series, you can count on McLeod.
The NHRA Stock Eliminator Class is one of the most legendary
and talked about classes in drag racing. We are proud
to be part of setting another milestone in this prestigious
class."

Tate
Sets New AHDRA Record On Mickey Thompson Tires
Mickey
Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels congratulates
Carrie “The Amazon” Tate on
an incredible performance at the All Harley Drag
Racing Association (AHDRA) Carolina Spring Nitro Nationals
at Rockingham Dragway. Coming into the semi finals, Tate
competed against legendary racer Mark Cox, the number one
qualifier, and thrilled the crowd with a 7.29-second run
on Mickey Thompson 31.0/14.0-15M tires (part# 3073M) setting
a new record for a female Nitro Harley pilot, racing impressively
close to Cox’s quick 7.167-second run.
“It
was an honor to compete with Mark,” said Tate. “My
run was crisp and straight as an arrow, but not enough
to beat his wicked fast pass. I look forward to lining
up with Mark again this season with my bike, ‘Brutus,’
and my Mickey Thompson tires.”

Thompson is a 2012 sponsor of the AHDRA, celebrating 35
years in 2012. Racer participation that started with 50

Milan
Dragway in Milan, MI is home to many different
race events throughout the season, and their racing surface
has been home to testing for one of the most important vehicles
to come along in years - the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet. This
makes Milan a perfect venue as the fourth stop on the NMRA
Keystone Automotive Ford Nationals annual tour - near the
heart of the automotive industry and just minutes away from
the home of the Blue Oval in Dearborn. The Milan event is
a bit different from the rest of the stops on the NMRA
schedule in that it's a two-day event rather than three
or four, packing all of the typical NMRA action into Friday
and Saturday, June 15th and 16th, 2012. The fast-paced
action means that the competitors are under the gun from
the minute they arrive at the racetrack, as two qualifying
sessions are held on Friday, with the second one under the
lights, and the third session Saturday morning. From there,
the event heads right into the elimination sessions Saturday
afternoon and night, making each qualifying hit on Friday
that much more important for the racers to gain a leg up
on their competition.
Gates
open Friday at noon, with a test & tune from
3:00 pm – 6:00 pm, qualifying at 6:00 pm, and ET
bracket racing at 7:30 pm. Gates open Saturday at 9:00
am, with time trials starting at 10:00 am. For more info

In
publicizing events here at The Dragtime News
I’ve come across all different racing clubs and organizations
in various parts of the country. I'm actually seeing a trend
away from bracket racing as part of a sanctioning body's ET
points program. One thing I’ve noticed is when it comes
to all-out, high-MPH heads-up racing, they do it big in Texas.
That’s why, even though I don’t currently focus
too much coverage on the Southwest part of the country, I
thought you’d like to learn about one particular group
that’s come to my attention. The High Velocity
Impact Racers of Houston Outlaw Racing is gearing
up to roll into Dallas Raceway (which is
under new management) in Crandall TX for their Texas
vs. the World race on June 8th & 9th,
2012. The event will include a Gambler’s Race
on Friday night June 8th for the Outlaws. This race will be
Winner Take All with a $500.00 entry. There’ll also
be a Friday night Winner Take All Gambler’s Race for
Radial 275 or 28/10s with an entry fee of $200.00.
The
Outlaw True Tens are fast cars on small tires that run on
the ragged edge of "traction vs. disaster." In
addition to the Outlaw True Tens, other classes include
True Street, Index Racing and JR Dragsters, all running
heads-up.
They’ll
also have Pro Mods joining them this season in a Gambler’s
Race on Saturday June 9th. They’ll run the top qualified
fields (8 or 16 or 32 x $500.00 depending on how many show
up) and a non-qualified Jack Pot race with the additional
entries. The entry fee for this race is $500.00, winner
take all.
Visit www.HoustonOutlawRacing.com
to learn more. It’s a forum with lots of information
and photos of many of their cars. I'm sure a quick Google
search will find videos of their cars in action, too.

News: S&W Hires Volpe, Implements Shipping Special for
May 2012
S&W
Race Cars has announced that Carlo ‘Ollie’
Volpe has joined their sales team. Ollie’s
interest in the internal combustion engine started in the
late 1950’s. He was tearing apart and rebuilding carburetors
and lawnmower engines long before his 15th birthday. In
1964, he crossed paths with Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins,
who would change his commitment to engines and racing for
the rest of his life. The knowledge and respect that he
acquired in his formative years has given Volpe the desire
to always strive to be the best.
Through
the late sixties and early seventies Ollie’s cars
set 4 NHRA National Records in Super Stock and Street
Eliminator. “Frankly, Ollie has the ‘right
stuff.’ His racing background combined with his
vibrant personality and depth of professional motorsports
experience fits the S&W team profile,” said
S&W’s Sales manager, Tom Hoosigian. “Both
our sales team and our customers will benefit from having
a person of Ollie’s caliber on board.”
Ollie
has worked for some of the nation's top drag race engine
builders, including Reher Morrison, Sonny Leonard, and
John Lingenfelter. His technical articles and photos have
appeared in Hot Rod, Super Stock Magazine, Drag Racing
Magazine, Drag Racing Monthly, and Bracket Racing Magazine.
In addition, Moroso Performance Products, Canfield Cylinder
Heads, Jesel, and The Mr. Gasket Performance Group appear
on his resume. Volpe’s experience includes everything
from Sales & Marketing to New Product Development,
which is his forte.

Brooks
Robbins: Devoted Bracket Racer Defies The Odds
I
received this email from a racer named Brooks Robbins
from upstate New York, who wrote to be added to my email
list. I thought his story was very inspirational and wanted
to share it with you here. He said, “I started
racing a long time ago, back when Fonda Speedway was a NASCAR
track, both dirt and drag, running Wednesday nights really
just getting my feet wet. I was about 17 years old and that
was in the early-to-mid 60s. When NASCAR pulled out of drag
racing, we shifted our racing to South Glens Falls Dragoway,
and ran in the stock class there until bracket racing was
started, and ran there until the track closed, with a championship
the first year of bracket racing. From there we started
bracket racing at Lebanon Valley Dragway, the best track
in the area, and we raced there for many years in Heavy
Eliminator class, with a championship in 1989 and 1991,
with my son (in the blue Super Bee above) taking
it in 1990. In 1992 I moved to the Pro Class, finishing
7th that year, 1993 finished 6th, 1994 did not finish in
the top 10, and than in 1995 I finished 9th. All of the
racing from South Glens Falls to Lebanon Valley was done
in the same car, my 1963 Plymouth Sport Fury named "CLASS
OF 63".
At
the end on the 1995 season my spine was dislocated. I was
paralyzed from the waste down on my right side and was told
that I may never walk again. Well here I am again, signed
up to run Pro this year at Lebanon Valley, and am loving
it. It’s not with the same car; I sold it when I was
recovering, thinking that my racing was over with. As I
progressed my interest started to overwhelm me and near
the end of the 2011 season my son bought me a car and said
"Let’s go racing again, Dad,” so this year
I will be running a 1972 Plymouth Scamp, running in the
mid to high 11s, with sticky Mickey’s and mufflers,
and we will build on that.
As
you can tell, racing is in my blood, and in my family’s
blood, and has been since my son was born. He is now 43
years old, and racing was a part of his growing up, it kept
him off the streets and out of trouble, and out of jail.
I can not thank drag racing enough for what it has given
me and my family.”
What
a motivating and inspirational story. Thank you for sharing
it, Brooks. Your letter sums up perfectly how racing occupies
such a special place in those who do it. There is nothing
that I can add except to wish Brooks and his son the best
of luck this year racing at Lebanon Valley.

I’ve
recently discovered a product that I’d like to share
with you. It's an exhaust gasket by a company named Remflex.
I first learned about Remflex at the 2011 PRI
Show in Orlando; if you saw my coverage (see
it HERE)
you may recall reading about them.
I’d
been using reusable copper header gaskets on my engines,
and although they worked OK, I was always annoyed by the
constant “tsk-tsk-tsk” of a slight leak somewhere
at the headers. I was never sure if it was a faulty gasket
or if there was an imperfection in the header or head;
all I knew is that I was getting tired of hearing it.
When I saw the Remflex gaskets at the show, the first
thing that caught my eye was how thick they are. That’s
by design, because they’re meant to crush significantly,
thereby absorbing imperfections that would normally cause
a leak. I told Remflex that I had to pull one of my heads
during the winter and that I’d like to try a set.
The set is now on my engine, and they performed just as
intended. No more “tsk-tsk-tsk.” Learn more
at www.remflex.com.

News: ATI’s Rini Wins and Ebert Qualifies #1 at Bradenton
ATI's
Chris Rini kicked off the NMCA season opener at
Bradenton with a win in Pro Street. The 2010 Pro Street
champ looked strong in qualifying and ended the day with
a 6.03 @ 235 MPH - good enough for top qualifier. Unfortunately,
he lost a valve on the last run and had to put in last year's
engine for eliminations. The old motor didn't miss a beat
as Chris put down a pair of 6.10s before going on to take
the win in the Pro Street final over Bill Lutz.
In
the LSX Real Street class, Lingenfelter Performance's Jon
Ebert took the #1 spot with the low ET of the day
at 8.608 @ 161.57, besting the field by a tenth. Ebert's
2010 Camaro has a host of ATI products throughout, including
a Superglide 4 transmission, Outlaw
Torque Converter, ATI SuperplateFlexplate, Super Damper
and Super F synthetic transmission fluid.
LPE's 358 LS7 puts out some great HP; Jon made it to the
final but had a little too much power and spun the tires.
Performance
Racing Industry (PRI), producers of the motorsports
business magazine and trade show, finalized plans to be
purchased by the Specialty Equipment Market Association
(SEMA). The transaction is set to close in late
March 2012.
With 20-plus years of publishing and management experience
at PRI, John Kilroy will serve as Vice
President/General Manager of PRI and assume day-to-day operations
for the group. All the operations, employees and offices
will remain intact at PRI's current location in Laguna Beach,
California.
"Steve Lewis launched the PRI concept a quarter-of-a-century
ago, as an organization totally dedicated solely to the
racing industry," said Kilroy. "It was Steve's
dream that PRI continue to serve the racing community, and
to 'nest' PRI with an organization that clearly understands
PRI's heritage and the role we play in how the racing industry
conducts business. We are pleased to have found that strategic
partner in SEMA."
"We carefully considered all our options, and SEMA
was the obvious choice to carry on the legacy of the PRI
brand," said Lewis. "SEMA is financially sound
and has an experienced management team. They bring a long-term
outlook to the table, as well as exceptional insight into
the trade show business overall. I have no doubt that the
PRI brand will continue to deliver value to the racing community,
and I know John Kilroy and the current management group
will keep the basic business themes that have been established
as they continue to work out of the current location here
in Laguna Beach that has housed the PRI family for all these
years," he said.
The
25th Annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show takes
place November 29 - December 1, 2012, in the North/South
Building of the Orange County Convention Center
in Orlando, Florida. It features exhibits by 1,100 racing
companies in 3,100 booths, requiring 700,000 square feet
to house the event. For more information, visit www.performanceracing.com

S&W
Taps Into Their Roots, Sponsors March Meet Radio
In
case you missed it, S&W Race Cars was
a sponsor of BangShift.com's live March Meet coverage
last weekend. S&W’s roots go back to the early
days of drag racing in both front-engine dragsters and fuel
funny cars. S&W’s founder Walt Weney
(pictured) is a drag racing pioneer who began setting NHRA
records in 1962. Scott Weney, S&W’s President
and 2000 IHRA Funny Car World Champion, cut his teeth in
the fuel funny cars of the late 70s, including the famed
‘Frantic Ford.’ Today, S&W Nostalgia Front
Engine Dragsters and Nostalgia Funny Cars are still setting
records and can be found at many nostalgia races around
the world.
Nostalgia
drag racing is a growing sport,” said S&W’s
Jill Canuso. “The March Meet is
a special nostalgia race at an equally famous venue, and
it’s one that shouldn’t be missed so we teamed
with BangShift.com to bring fans and racers four days
of live racing action."
With
the popularity of nostalgia racing, perhaps you've been
considering getting a nostalgia car of your own. If so,
make it a new one so that it's all up to spec. If you’d
like to speak with S&W Race Cars about having your
own car built, call 800-523-3353 ext.111;

to a $1,000 semifinal round, and a $2,000 runner-up prize.
Saturday’s main event is overflowing with cash,
with not only $50,000 to be awarded to the winner, but
also $10,000 to the runner-up, $2,500 to the
semis, and $300 round money beginning with third round
winners.
Drivers
can save money with a three-day weekend entry of just
$699. Door cars will run against door cars and dragsters
against dragsters as long as possible in each round, up
to the 16-Car Ladder. Each race will have just one round
of buybacks, run re-entry style, where buybacks race each
other one round for the right to advance to the second
round of eliminations. The Re-entry format virtually guarantees
that a driver will only have to light no more than nine
win lamps to claim even the massive $50,000 carrot.
“We
designed an event where racers could win a few rounds
here and there and win their money back,” said promoter
Danny Sons. “It should be a big
one! It’s a great way to welcome back Paul Cartwright,
who will be our Racemaster. Paul will be back for good,
and that’s a great thing for the racers. Make plans
now for the biggest and best kick-off bracket event in
years!”
Mickey

Alston
Racing will be hosting a race car chassis seminar
by renowned chassis tuner Dave Morgan,
March 3rd & 4th, in Lake Zurich, IL.
Morgan’s
previous one-day seminars had a reputation for being over-packed
with information, so much so that some racers felt it was
too much to cover in a single day. As a result, Morgan has
developed a new two-day seminar series for racers who want
to receive more in-depth information at a better pace and
one that allows for more discussion and interaction. Morgan
believes the new, two-day format will provide everyone with
a better learning experience,” said Morgan. “We
can cover many more details about the subjects I normally
cover, while adding new material and allowing more time
for discussion of examples and the challenges everyone faces
in setting up their chassis.”

Island
Dragway Gives Super Pro Racers 320 Additional Feet of Shutdown
Island
Dragway in Great Meadows, NJ has announced that
their Super Pro class will race 1,000 feet during the track's
Saturday night ET Bracket Racing points program in the 2012
season. According
to Island Dragway manager Steve Opetosky,
"The 1000 ft. Super Pro length was based on the reality
that cars have gotten faster and faster. The fact is that
racers have always and will always look to make their vehicles
faster but since the shutdown at Island can't be lengthened,
a safety and business decision was made to try to bring
back some of the quicker Super Pro racers that would still
like to race at Island but were concerned about doing so.
This is only for Super Pro and only during Saturday Summit
racing series ET bracket racing. The Super Pro racer will
receive E.T. and MPH for the 1000 ft. along with all the
other standard info like reaction time, 60', etc.. They
will not receive any 1/4 mile info. However, If a Super
Pro racer is running test & tune on Saturday or any
other day, they will receive all regular 1/4 mile data.
The E.T. breaks for 1000 ft. are going to be 5.80 - 9.99,
with 6.23 and quicker requiring the advanced E.T. rules
safety equipment. These numbers equate to the 1/4 mile numbers.
This takes effect for the 2012 season. Once our website
is completley up and running, all will be posted."
Island
Dragway has heard the concerns of racers with fast Super
Pro cars who have stopped racing at the track, and it
seems like a reasonable attempt at getting these racers
back. Although a good portion of the feedback posted on
the Web is supportive, judging by some of the posts you'd
have thought they banned delay boxes, outlawed dragsters
and changed the Earth's rotation all in one fell swoop.
It
would have been easier for the track to dispense with
the 1,000 foot altogether and go straight to 1/8 mile
Super Pro, but instead they chose to give their racers
as much dragstrip as they could while still improving
safety. Whether you race Island or not, give them a break
and wish them well. They wouldn't have implemented this
unless they felt it was absolutely necessary, and we cannot
afford to lose any more dragstrips.
Maryland
International Raceway in Budds Creek, MD is undergoing
major upgrades for the upcoming 2012 season. So far, MIR has
purchased additional hand-held radios to supplement their
existing supply, which will make running events even smoother
as more staff can now be in communication with each other.
MIR’s starting line is getting a facelift into the modern
era. They’ve removed all of the old asphalt that's between
the two concrete pads and replacing everything with brand
new concrete. This new concrete pad will extend from the water
box to the Christmas tree. MIR will also have poured concrete
walls in the center for the starter area and a concrete strip
to the tree. This new look will give racers a cleaner and
better looking backdrop for all of their photos and videos.
Also for 2012,
new gates and barriers to help section off the pit areas
for easier parking and traffic control, all of the wood
bleachers have now been removed and replaced with aluminum,
and the track is expanding the asphalt pad behind the water
box. MIR will also have two ambulances and two fire trucks
for increased racer safety.

This
is an advertisement that a veteran Northeast bracket and
NHRA sportsman racer ran recently in The Raceway
News, the newspaper of Old Bridge Township
Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ:
“RIDE
WANTED: No "hired gun" touring professional in
drag racing would make the following statement: "If
I lose a round of eliminations due to a reaction time worse/higher
than .029 or red (minus .001 or worse), I will pay a penalty
of $100 for that round loss." They wouldn’t make
that statement, because nobody is consistently that good
and unforeseeable mechanical and physical circumstances
are always present. Al Vanis is looking for a ride in a
consistent and well-maintained "foot brake" race
car. If I determine that the race car offered is as described,
I will pay the owner of it $100 for any round in eliminations
that I lose by fouling or from a reaction time of .030 or
worse/higher. Judging the "stripe" is an educated
guess, and nobody is better at it than a racer who has been
doing just that for 45 years. Make me pay!!”
I
heard about this and knew immediately that I’d run it
to share with you. This is an inventive approach to getting
a ride for the season, and it shows how serious we bracket
racers are about our sport.
Al
Vanis is about as hard-core a bracket racer as
there is. He’s dedicated a good portion of his life
to our sport, just as many of us have. He’s also raced
Stock Eliminator and has notched two national event wins,
with one of those being the U.S. Nationals.
The times I’ve raced against Al he’s been pretty
stellar on the Tree. You never take this guy lightly.
So what
does a good racer do if they’re approaching a season
without a ride? They get creative like Al has. There are
all different ways to get creative, and perhaps reading
about Al's approach will spark some ideas of your own. The
main thing is to elevate the top-of-mind awareness others
have of you. I can almost guarantee that after someone reads
Al's ad, they will remember it and him. That's key.
If you
own a consistent footbrake car and are interested in contacting
Al, email him at ajajman@yahoo.com.
Donald
Kanka of Ewing, NJ will be expanding his events
in 2012 with his 2010 S&W Race Cars 225” front-engined
nostalgia dragster. So far Donald has only logged five
partial-run passes on the car, but has gone a best of
6.991 in the 1,000’ at Atco.
Donald’s
dragster includes Specialized 408 BB Chevy,
head work by RHS, complete Hilborn
Fuel Injection, MSD Mag, Hedman
Hedders, Steph’s Pan w/MorosoBilletPump, ATI
Trans, shorty case and bellhousing, converter and balancer,
Strange 12 bolt drop in pumpkin rear,
35 spline axles and Strange dual braking
system, Champion and Hayden
wheels, GoodyearTires,
and Deist chute. Jeff Kundratic
of JKR Racing in Baltimore did all the powder coating,
DJ Restoration of Ewing, NJ did the paint
and AGIN Signs did all the gold leaf
lettering and graphics.
Donald
belongs to two nostalgia associations and races at Maple
Grove, Englishtown, Atco,
Cecil CountyDragway,
and Island Dragway.
The
five second barrier has stood all season long in the NMCA
Pro Street class until the NMCA World Street
Finals in Indianapolis, where ATI’s Chris
Rini put
down a 5.988
ET at 236.4
MPH to become the 1st person in any NMCA class
to break into the fives. That run turned out to be the
fastest pass of the day and put Rini #1 in qualifying.
Chris
runs an ATI
Superglide 4 and an ATI
Outlaw Converter, making his '69 Bickel Pro
Mod Camaro the fastest nitrous true automatic in the world.
See the run on ATI’s video page HERE.
No,
it's not an installment of Dragtime News On Location;
this time I was at Maple Grove only to race. The Dodge
did well, too; I was still in it at the split.

In
a landmark move for the highly-competitive Extreme
Pro Stock (XPS) class, the American Drag
Racing League (ADRL) announced that it will allow
electronic fuel injection (EFI) on all XPS cars starting
in the 2012 season. With the ruling, the ADRL becomes the
first major drag racing sanctioning body to allow EFI to
be used in any Pro Stock car. Manufacturers wishing to have
their EFI Controllers in the world’s premier eighth-mile
drag racing league will have to first submit them to the
ADRL for approval prior to them being allowed to be used
at any ADRL event.

UNC-Charlotte
Engineering student and sportsman drag racing standout
Kyle Cultrera has capped his solid 2011
NHRA campaign with dual top-ten finishes in the NHRA Northeast
Division points standings. Cultrera enjoyed his share
of success on the race track in 2011, securing five event
wins along with two runner-up finishes. One of those wins
came on the national stage at his North Carolina home
track, zMAX Dragway, during the Visitmyrtlebeach.com 4-Wide
Nationals in April. "The win at zMAX was easily the
highlight of my season," said Kyle. "I really
had to earn that one, having to get past so many worthy
opponents."
Kyle also earned four other event wins on the season,
the most exciting of which in the Competition Eliminator
category behind the wheel of Dave Ring’s
and Al Ackerman's H/EA Bantam. Cultrera maneuvered
his way through five rounds of eliminations and again
found himself hoisting the Wally trophy at Atco Raceway
for his first Comp victory.
"It felt great to come through for Dave [Ring], Al
[Ackerman] and my dad who helps tune the car; they worked
hard all year and that win made it all worth it!"
exclaimed Cultrera.
Those individual performances paid dividends in terms
of divisional points in both classes as Cultrera finished
3rd in Comp and 9th in Super Comp in NHRA's Division 1.
Kyle knows his 2011 success would not be possible without
the help he receives from Dave Ring and Al Ackerman,
